GYNECOMASTIA

MALE BREAST REDUCTION

Gynecomastia is the over-development of the male breast, sometimes caused by an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and testosterone. It can affect one or both breasts, sometimes unevenly. Although gynecomastia is not a serious problem, it can often be a source of embarrassment for boys and men alike, and sometimes painful. It is in fact quite a common condition, affecting as many as 40% of the male population. The majority of cases have no known cause; however studies have suggested it is related to the use of drugs or medical conditions.

The best candidates for Gynecomastia correction are healthy, emotionally stable men who wish to reduce the size of their breasts to restore self-confidence. Whilst patients may be of any age, those with firm, elastic skin are better candidates as reshaping post-surgery will be more effective. It is important that Gynecomastia is not seen as an alternative to exercise, and obese men who have not attempted to correct the problem through conventional methods may be discouraged from the procedure. Furthermore, those who consume excessive amounts of alcohol and or marijuana may too not be the ideal candidate. It has been suggested that these drugs, along with anabolic steroids may cause Gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia is an outpatient procedure, performed using either local or general anesthesia depending on the extent of the surgery. It is important that one has realistic expectations and must talk to their doctor and gain a thorough understanding of the procedure before making any decisions.
